GENERAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING CERTIFICATE (GETC) SAQA ID NO 71751 ABET QUALIFICATION (AET LEVEL 4)

(a) GETC-AET LEVEL 4: THE College OFFER THE FOLLOWING:

  • Fundamental Component: ONE official language and Mathematical Literacy or Mathematics and Mathematical Sciences.
  • Core: Life Orientation.
  • Electives Component: Academic Learning Areas or Vocational Learning Areas.

(b) ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE GETC- AET LEVEL 4:

The GETC-ABET qualification (NQF Level 1) SAQA ID No. 71751 provides adult students with fundamental basics in general education learning. The purpose of this qualification is to equip students with foundational learning by acquiring knowledge, skills and values in specified learning areas. It also allows students to choose electives unit standards, which relate to occupational learning relevant to their area of interest or specialization.


(c) DURATION OF THIS QUALIFICATION IS ONE YEAR

To obtain a GETC, the candidate must comply with both the internal and external assessment requirements as stipulated in the qualification policy.



(d) RULES OF COMBINATION OF LEARNING AREAS FOR THE GETC-ABET QUALIFICATION: 120 CREDITS
  • Fundamentals Component: Compulsory 39 Credits
    One Official Language: 23 Credits
    Mathematical Literacy: 16 Credits OR
    Mathematics and Mathematical Sciences: 16 Credits OR
  • Core Component: Compulsory 32 Credits
    Life Orientation: 32 Credits
  • Electives Component: Optional/Choice 51 Credits

  • Human and Social Sciences: 23 Credits
  • Natural Sciences: 15 Credits
  • Economic and Management Sciences:21 Credits
  • Arts and Culture: 17 Credits
  • Technology: 11 Credits
  • One Additional Official Language (Excluding the language chosen as a Fundamental): 23 Credits.

(e) OPTIONS IN THE COMBINATIONS OF LEARNING AREAS:

Option 1: 5 Learning Areas
Students in this option will offer TWO Fundamentals, ONE Core and TWO Electives

Option 2: 6 Learning Areas
In this option students will offer TWO Fundamentals, ONE Core and THREE Electives.

Option 3: 7 or more Learning Areas

In this option, students will offer TWO Fundamentals, ONE Core and FOUR Electives
(f) ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

The following are minimum requirements for a student to enroll for this qualification:

  • An official learning area statement at ABET level 3 for the fundamental component issued by a registered institution/centre; or an ABET level 3 report card issued by an accredited centre; or proof of level of achievement equivalent to ABET level 3 or the results of placement assessment, administered by the centre, indicating readiness for entry into the GETC (ABET level 4) learning programme.
  • A person must be 16 years or older;
  • Certified copy of a bar coded South African Identity document (ID); or certified copy of a passport and a study permit if the student is a foreign national.
  • Proof of address

Promotion requirements
To obtain a GETC, a candidate must fulfill the following minimum promotion requirements:

  • Achieve at least 40% in one Language, Literacy and Communication (LLC) Learning Area;
  • Achieve at least 40% in either Mathematical Literacy or Mathematics and Mathematical Sciences
  • Achieve at least 40% in Life Orientation
  • Achieve at least 40% in two other learning areas selected from the Vocational and/or Academic Learning Area groups
  • Obtain a minimum of 120 credits at AET Level 4 and this should be obtained from learning areas in the Fundamentals, Core and Elective categories
